Google Mail - The visit of the President of N,A.L.C. - ashfordlaryngectomyclub@googlemail.com: "There are very few experts in each area, that know how to deal with the pitfalls facing Laryngectomees,
ie; the expulsion of a valve and the refitting of one.
The dangers of ensuring the dilator is held in position at all times, to prevent the part - closing of the fistula, with the inability to drink and to take medication. etc .
Then of course, the second operation to recut a fistula.

There are so many doctors who wear the hat and title of Ear Nose and Throat, who have come from abroad and are engaged by the NHS, but have had very little experience, some none at all, of dealing with Laryngectomees. One recently had never heard of Blom-Singer.?

The point I am trying to make, is that the expertise in this field lies with our trained Sisters and some Nurses, a few doctors, and the consultants.

I feel sure that this expertise is not properly recognised by hospital mangement, who have recently started dispersing those valuable experts to other areas or other hospitals. To me it is just a way of saving money in staff numbers, but the result is just the opposite, with delayed expert treatment for Laryngectomees, and probably another operation.
You could even say 'well you are master butcher so you can do it instead'.
